Chapter 8

“TRY IT NOW,” SAID NIALL.

Bas scowled at the screen in front of him, grabbed the controls and tried firing up the engines again. “Nothing.” He rubbed sweat from his brow. “Keep trying. Sera and I are about to head out to see Clara.”

Niall frowned. “You sure seeing your sister is a good idea?”

“I need to be sure she’s safe. We’ll be gone a couple of hours. Make sure Layard doesn’t fall into a rift.”

“He said he’s doing some more tests.”

“Yeah,” he snorted. “Tests mean dangerous experiments. Good thing I’m taking Sera with me, or she’d probably participate,” he said. “Try to get this thing working. I want to fly it, not sleep in it.”

Sera swung her pack over her shoulder as she came out. “Are you sure you’ll be alright?” she asked Layard.

“I’ve survived worse than being knocked on my backside by you and a demon. Go,” the old man said. He glanced at Bas. “Watch yourself, boy. I still say this is reckless. Clara’s guardian is a good woman. She’ll protect the girl with her life.”

“We won’t be gone for too long. Don’t make me have to drag your arse out of a rift,” Bas said. “See you later, guys.”

Sera opened the lines which Layard had told them he’d warded so no demon could break through.

Bas felt half disappointed he hadn’t been able to open them himself. He’d enjoyed using Layard’s staff the day before; Sera said he’d get better at it. He grabbed her hand as he stepped into the glowing pool of energy, not wanting to lose track of her.

They reappeared in a grove of trees.

“I hope no one saw us come through,” he muttered, glancing around but not sensing anyone nearby. They moved out the grove and onto a dirt track.

“What made you want to come and see Clara now?” Sera asked. “You said yourself she’s better far away from all of us.”

“I just need to make sure she’s safe. I trust Layard’s judgement but with everything that is happening...” He knew if war broke out or more demons got loose, nowhere in the world would be safe for anyone. But he didn’t voice that fear. He didn’t need to. Sera knew him better than anyone.

“You never told me what you and Layard talked about last night.” From what he’d seen, she and Layard had been deep in conversation, but neither of them had mentioned about what.

Sera shrugged. “We were talking about the demon problem.” She avoided his gaze. Something she always did when she was hiding something from him.

“And?” Bas didn’t feel like having to pry the information out of her. He’d thought they’d long since moved past that since getting back together.

“And, nothing.”

He frowned. “Come on, Sera, we agreed we wouldn’t keep secrets anymore.”

“I’m not – it’s not my secret to tell.” She sighed. “I don’t want to betray a friend’s trust.”

“Surprised you can forgive him since he helped split us up.”

She tucked to lock of hair behind her ear. “I like him; he’s a good man.
